What is a Compute Time? How is it calculated?

The Compute Time is calculated by adding the time each transcoder spends processing its portion of the video. We charge for a minimum time of 30 seconds per transcoder.

The pricing baseline is the 4vCPU configuration. Each transcoder type has a minute multiplier based on its processing power. For example, jobs that run on 8vCPU transcoder consume minutes at 2 times the rate that jobs on 4vCPU transcoder consume.

Transcoder TypeMinute MultiplierPrice
4vCPU1$0.012 / min
8vCPU2$0.024 / min
16vCPU4$0.048 / min

Examples of compute time calculations:

  • 4 transcoders 8vCPU working for 1 minute each, the compute time equals 4 transcoders x 1 minute = 4 minutes.
    The cost is 4 minutes x $0.012 x 2 = $0.096.
  • 2 transcoders 4vCPU working for 40 seconds and 15 seconds, the compute time equals 40 + = 70 seconds.
    The cost is (70 seconds / 60 seconds) x $0.012 x 1 = $0.014.

This ensures pricing reflects the true compute effort distributed across all transcoders, not just the total job duration.

How much compute time do I need for my videos?

To answer this question, we will use the Blender movie "Tears of Steel" which is 12:14 minutes long. The source file is 3840x1714, 70MB/s, 24fps, 6.3GB in size.

The video size and bitrate are huge and this is not a typical video. Most of the time, the specs are much smaller.

TranscodersFormatCompute timeCost
10 x 16vCPUAV135 min$0.42
10 x 8vCPUH.26418 min$0.21
10 x 8vCPUAV113 min$0.15
5 x 8vCPUH.2647 min$0.08

These numbers are specific to this video example. Compute time varies depending on the video's resolution, bitrate, format, and transcoder settings. Higher transcoder configurations process videos faster but cost more.

Do you offer a free trial?

Yes. Every new account gets a 14-day free trial with 500 compute minutes. Explore all core features, test your workflow, and evaluate performance. You can cancel anytime.
The trial is available only for your first team. No credit card required.

What does job concurrency mean?

Job concurrency is the maximum number of jobs that can be pending at the same time across all projects in your team. Pending jobs are waiting to start and begin automatically as processing capacity becomes available. They start in the order they were created across all projects in your team.

This is separate from vCPU concurrency, which limits how much transcoding work can run simultaneously. If your team reaches its job concurrency limit, new job requests are rejected until a pending job starts or is cancelled.

Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan?

Yes. You can change plans anytime from your account settings under Manage Subscription. Upgrades take effect immediately, while downgrades apply at the start of the next billing cycle.

How do I cancel my plan?

You can cancel anytime from your account settings under Manage Subscription. Your plan remains active until the end of the current billing cycle.
There are no lock-ins or hidden fees, but any unused wallet credits will be forfeited.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

Do you use a prepaid system?

Yes. Chunkify operates on a prepaid wallet system by default. This gives you complete control over spending: no auto-billing, no hidden fees.
You can top up anytime, track usage in real time, and set budget alerts to stay within limits.

Do unused included compute minutes roll over?

No. Unused compute time does not roll over to the next month. Each plan resets its included compute time at the start of every new billing cycle.

What happens if I run out of wallet credits?

Your transcoding jobs will pause automatically until you top up your wallet. You'll receive two alerts before reaching a zero balance. No automatic charges, no surprises.

Can I set a budget or spending limit?

Yes. You can preload your wallet with credits, define a spending threshold, and receive real-time alerts when approaching your limit, giving you complete cost control.

Do you charge for failed jobs?

No. Failed transcoding jobs are never billed.
